Your health and the health of the planet is enhanced by natural products, free of toxins.

“It is not fair to leave a safety deficit because so many harmful and toxic chemicals are put into products with no idea of where they will end up or how to prevent them from leaching into biological systems” – William McDonough, The Upcycle

Just like food, people need to know about the different types of preservatives and their respective toxicity profiles.

At Abodo we believe that everyone deserves to know what’s in their wood.

Our commitment to product transparency is demonstrated with the achievement of Declare Certification for Elements Vulcan, Vulcan+ and Protector Oil.

We have also developed a simple “Safe Wood Factor” rating system, based on a wood preservatives report produced by Graham Environmental, a leading toxicity consultancy.

Hidden dangers of chemically preserved wood (standard treated wood)

In Use
With most modern wood preservatives, other than Copper Chrome Arsenic (CCA) the risk to humans of wood preservatives “in use” are extremely low.

Most wood products leach small amounts of chemical in service. It is important to understand that while leaching is relatively low risk to humans, it can affect the environment. Your choice of preservative may be safe for you, but not the surrounding environment. Fortunately, newer generation preservatives exhibit dramatically lower leaching levels.

One of the biggest issues with preserved wood is it’s disposal. The largest risk is the accidental burning of wood preservatives. Some preservatives, notably Copper Chrome Arsenic (CCA) release extremely poisonous toxins into the air when burnt.

Abodo is one of the first producers regionally to offer a carbon neural, non landfill end of life disposal option.

Our Push for Change

Abodo produces beautiful exterior wood products that are healthy for people and the environment. Our vision is a future with wood, where people’s living and working environments are built from the world’s only truly renewable building material. After all, the beauty of natural wood is proven to reduce stress levels and deliver a better state of living. Let’s remove unsustainable wood products and toxic preserved wood products from the construction landscape.
In 2014 Abodo was awarded the Green Ribbon Award by the Ministry for the Environment – for showing industry leadership in sustainability. In 2015 Abodo was awarded the Sustainable Business Network Award for reducing toxicity in the built environment.
