Project Revisit: BH2 House – Barwon Heads, Australia

Built in 2020, the Sioo:x coating on this Abodo Vulcan clad home in Barwon Heads is weathering well.

Despite being located on the edge of an estuary in an area of Victoria that experiences wet winters and dry summer temperatures that reach the high 30s and above, the Vulcan weatherboards have withstood the pressure, staying straight and silvering off beautifully three years after installation on BH2 House.

There were several reasons for the specification of Vulcan timber in Sioo:x for this project, including the coating's ability to take on salt spray given the strong, protective barrier it creates.

Vulcan timber is effectively pre-shrunk, with resins removed during the thermal modification process. This means the timber doesn’t buckle or warp when exposed to adverse weather or changing moisture levels. The silicone based Sioo:x coating then not only protects the timber but also delivers a naturally weathered look which is in keeping with its estuary-side location.

Featuring wide-spanning timber beams and solar-controlling vertical louvres, the home’s modern, clean lines are softened by the varied texture and silvered tone of the Sioo:x. Three years down the track, it is clear that the timber was well detailed, with the end grain devoid of any mold or mildew, despite being just 300m from the ocean. The timber will continue to silver off, requiring a recoat after around 5-7 years. This makes it a relatively low maintenance timber cladding choice for this home, compared to other semi-transparent coatings.

Matching durability and a rustic, yet contemporary aesthetic, the Abodo Vulcan Cladding in Sioo:x is clearly lasting the distance for these homeowners.
